Study summary and findings:
Daily consumption of Juice Plus+ for a little as three weeks reduces the immediate adverse effect of high fat meals on blood flow compared to placebo.
This double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized parallel group study determined if three to four weeks of daily Juice Plus+ or placebo consumption could prevent the immediate reduction of flow-mediated vasodilation caused by a high-fat meal. Thirty-eight healthy American volunteers took part in the study. Subjects were randomized groups to take Juice Plus+ Orchard Blend and Garden Blend, Juice Plus+ Orchard Blend, Garden Blend and Vineyard Blend, or placebo daily for 28 days. The flow-mediated brachial artery reactivity test (BART) was used at baseline, day 21 (end of week 3) and day 28 (end of week 4), both before and after a high fat (50 gram), 900 calorie meal, to measure vasoconstriction. Fasting blood samples for analysis were collected at the beginning and end of the study. After both 21 and 28 days, the Juice Plus+ groups showed a reduction in the detrimental effect of the high fat meal on vascular function. The addition of Vineyard Blend to the regimen of Orchard and Garden Blend had an additional positive influence on this parameter. The Juice Plus+ groups also had a modest decrease in total and LDL cholesterol and no change in HDL cholesterol or triglycerides compared to the placebo group. The entire study population had low baseline homocysteine, which remained unchanged in during the investigation.
